what does subscribing do?

I don't know what subscribing to posts does. Can anyone tell me?

When you subscribe to a Board topic, The Zone will email you when someone posts a new post to that topic. For instance, if you were to subscribe to this one, the Zone will let you know thru an email, that someone has posted to this topic so you can know to check it out when you come back to this site.

also when you are logged and someone replies, you get an online notification.
